Relativity Enters Distribution Partnership With Germany's Senator Entertainment

NY Times reporter Brian Stelter has something in common with Anthony Weiner. Like the disgraced congressman, Stelter unintentionally broadcast a private direct message -- or "DM" -- on Twitter to his entire Twitter feed. (In Stelter's case, that's 97,000 followers-and-counting).our editor recommendsAlec Baldwin's Twitter Account 'Deactivated' After 'Words With Friends' DebacleChristiane Amanpour to Leave ABC's 'This Week'; Launch CNN Show Demi Moore Explains Why She'll Stay 'Mrs. Kutcher' On TwitterKeith Olbermann Will No Longer Engage With His Twitter Followers Unlike Weiner, Stelter's DM was not salacious. On Tuesday, the journalist -- who covers media and television for the Times -- tried to confirm Christiane Amanpour's exit from ABC's This Week by sending a DM to a source on the social-networking site. Instead, he majorly messed up and made it public. The offending tweet: "I'm hearing that Amanpour is formally out of 'This Week' -- though only from a single source -- are you hearing the same?" In a further display of whoops, he even posted his work phone number. Realizing his mistake, Stelter immediately tweete a response to his flub: "Well, that was embarrassing. That was supposed to be a DM." His network largely supported him, with the Washington Post's Erik Wemple tweeting: "Just good reporting there. Nothing to be ashamed of." In the end, the snafu backfired in a good way: Stelter was able to find more sources through Twitter to match his Amanpour intel and publish an official story. "3 Reasons I didn't delete accidental tweet: people had already read it; some had retweeted it; it needed to be explained," Stelter said in a later post. As media reporter Michael Calderone notes at the Huffington Post, Stelter's mistweet indirectly spread word of Amanpour's exit, confirming months of rumors that she would be leaving the Sunday morning news program -- and prompting ABC to issue a statement from Amanpour hours later. Stelter, who's said he wished he could live in the Twitter feed, was apparently too busy reporting -- and tweeting about it -- to respond to requests for comment. The Scene at THR's 2011 Women In Entertainment Power 100 Breakfast

This story appears in the Dec. 2011 special issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Putting together the ranked list of entertainment's most powerful women for this annual issue, The Hollywood Reporter's 20th, is nothing short of agonizing. For the top spots, the deliberations over who goes where became topics of vigorous debate in the hallways here at 5700 Wilshire. PHOTOS: 2011 Women in Entertainment Power 100 In all the discussions, however, one undisputed trend emerged: TV, especially the world of cable, is ascendant, and women disproportionately are driving it. It's no coincidence that four of the top five women on this year's Power 100 list come from the medium (the extraordinary Amy Pascal alone represents film at No. 2). Just a few years ago, film dominated entertainment with the most prestige, the greatest revenue and the biggest impact on our national conversation. Not anymore. Programming such as The Daily Show, Mad Men and even Jersey Shore drives pop culture to a greater extent than any motion picture in recent years, extending its influence into the realms of fashion, politics, publishing and music. One major studio exec recently bemoaned to me that, outside of the Twilight franchise, film is lacking a major "event." "No one is talking about movies right now," said this exec. "It's all about cable." COMPLETE LIST: 2011 Women in Entertainment Power 100 At the same time, the earnings of some of the leading cable networks have dwarfed those of the major studios, and the valuation of Disney Media Networks -- the division overseen by the list's top-spot holder, Anne Sweeney -- is hugely more than that of its sister movie studio. Total revenue for the entire movie industry this year is estimated by PricewaterhouseCoopers at $36.8 billion; by contrast, television advertising in the U.S. brought in $71.1 billion, and you can double that number if you add subscription and license revenue. But economics aren't the only reason these women are at the top. It's also because television has provided opportunity that film simply hasn't. A newer industry, cable was welcoming to all when it was birthing multitudes of then-not-so-fashionable networks. The high-powered women at the top of TV largely got their breaks in the "Wild West" days of early cable -- as one executive describes them -- when television created openings that the established, more relationship-oriented movie world didn't. None of this is to take away from the incredible women in film and other mediums on our Power 100. The same exec who decried the lack of momentum in movies was quick to point out, "It's all cyclical." Indeed, every single person on the list reflects extraordinary drive, intelligence and ability to weather whatever is around the bend in the industry. I dare anyone to not be inspired by every person in this issue. Congratulations to all. Kurt Sutter Hopes To Help Keep Sons Of Anarchy Going Not Less Than 7 Seasons

Kurt Sutter, the colorful and from time to time churlish creator from the Forex biker smash Sons of Anarchy that wrapped its 4th and many effective campaign last evening, isoptimistic that his show will discover a seventh season. Or even more. SOA already continues to be restored for any fifth season of 13 episodes. He stated throughout a business call with reporters today, “We’re wishing to have the ability to tell the storyline you want to tell inside a seven-season arc, to possess the amount of time to achieve that. A minimum of we’re available to exploring that.” But he added that his experience like a author-professional producer around the Shield informs him that “the over the line costs may become an excessive amount of” when attempting to visit beyond season seven. The main reason Sutter is even in a position to consider three seasons in to the future is SOA just loved its greatest-ranked season, standing because the No.2 scripted drama on fundamental cable (trailing only AMC’s The Walking Dead) and also the greatest-ranked series ever on Forex. He credits the show’s growing viewership simply to the availability over Netflix. “It assisted people really plug into and obtain in to the show the very first couple of seasons,” Sutter thinks. “It’s been vital to the rise.” Essential, Sutter thinks, continues to be his drama’s capability to skirt the difficult line between art and commerce. “I’m very conscious that I’m writing a show for television,” he stated, “so I actually do wish to write story lines which are wealthy and sophisticated and figures which are three-dimensional. We’re fortunate to possess stars who weekly give tremendous performances. But there’s also a component of the reveal that’s incredibly pulpy and entertaining, which’s as essential as the wealthy, deep character stuff. I've no need to operate a reveal that a couple of hundred people watch. Basically wanted that type of audience, I’d go do theater…I’m not writing the show inside a vacuum. And That I’m an egomaniac. I wish to be loved, honored, worshiped and admired by everybody. And So I desire a large audience. I really like the very fact we’re beating the (broadcast) systems in key demos.” Sutter credited the show’s healthy rankings to “the fact I surround myself with those who are a lot more gifted than I'm. And great stars.” Sutter accepted he’s thinking about changing the SOA pacefor season fiveso that there's possibly a little less tumult packed throughout each episode. “My sensefor next season is it is a reduced boil,” he stated. “This season, everybody was kind of breathless through the finish of each and every episode, and my sense is the fact that next season that won’t be.” He added thathe was available to ongoing to possess guest stars show up on SOA who also labored with him around the Shield but was reluctant to be extend to that particular show’s stars Michael Chiklis and Walton Goggins.”I think it might be impossible to allow them to be regarded as someone else nowadays. It might be too annoying to create them to the show, around I really like and adore them as stars the ones.” And that he hasn’t yet made the decision how Sons will wrap, observing today, “Whether they’ll all find yourself dead inside a large puddle of bloodstream in the finish has not yet been determined.”

Talkback: What Is the Greatest Penis Moment in Movie History?

Since our friends at Next Movie totally went there, why not bat this one around Movieline HQ? It’s Friday! Live a little. In honor of Michael Fassbender’s infamous display of total nakedness in this week’s Shame — emotional and physical, to be fair — Next Movie ran down the nine greatest “penis moments” in the movies. Yes, Ewan McGregor. You made the list. Also receiving honors were The Crying Game (of course) and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, although I’d argue Dirk Diggler’s Dirk Diggler deserves higher placement in the rankings. And though this is quite thorough work, I have just one word: Antichrist. (That said, the “greatness” of its penis moments is debatable. Awesome high five sexytime great? Not so much.) But again, it’s Friday, Friday, gotta get down on some cinematic schlong talk. I open the flood gates to you, Movieliners! Discuss: Are there any glaring omissions to the list? What’s with Ewan McGregor’s exhibitionist streak? If you were on the fence before despite the glowing reviews and critical acclaim for Fassbender’s performance, is all this talk of a Fassboner enough to get you to see Shame this weekend? Lear sees politics the American way

Michael B. Keegan, Norman Lear and Alec Baldwin attend individuals for your American Way Basic principles 30th anni celebration in October.People for your American Way will mark its 30th anniversary inside a 12 ,. 5 fete within the Beverly Wilshire, despite the fact that you will notice plenty of references for the org's roots just like a counter for the religious right, founder Norman Lear sees an even more urgent link to the current.InchIn my experience what is happening at this time around with joblessness, the confluence in the neoconservative movement and religious right and enormous, large money... brought to that which you want at today in this particular country," he mentioned in the recent interview from his Beverly Slopes office, still sharp and energetic at 89. "So considering the children in Occupy Wall Street..youthful people are actually telling us, 'Enough,' that will become clearer after we complement.InchHe added, "Among the most popular of all the mythical American expressions is always that eternal vigilance might be the price you spend, because the seed items remain.InchIn creating People for your American Way, Lear was among only numerous industry figures to translate personal activism in to a lasting advocacy organization (he'll be among the honorees along with board member Alec Baldwin the same anniversary event happened in NY on March. 6). One of the org's finest early victories showed up 1987, if the together with other groups effectively fought against from the nomination of Robert Bork for the Top Court, a thing that presaged the polarizing nomination battles later on. More recent work has incorporated campaigns for marriage equality and much more in the influence of corporate profit politics.3 decades ago, Lear was during the time of the astonishing run of sitcoms that transformed primetime entertainment and was probably the most active figures in Hollywood's political scene, a pacesetter in a number of influential liberals who got the nickname the "Malibu mafia." He appreciated watching tv one morning at the begining of when he heard Jimmy Swaggart asking audiences to require for getting rid of a high Court justice. His company then had seven shows round the air, but Lear mentioned he am incensed by Swaggart's remarks that within an executive retreat just a couple of days later, he told his affiliate marketers, "Are searching for my alternative.""I used to be scared to dying," according to him in the televangelist's claims. "That frightened the hell from me."He made a decision to carry out a number of television spots, including one in which a hard-hatted forklift operator spoken in the ministers arriving on Radio and television "telling us that individuals are wonderful Christian followers or bad Christian followers according to their perspective.Inch The man's last line was "That is not the American way."While he walked to the culture wars, Lear mentioned he was conscious of he'd two large strikes against him -- he was from Hollywood, which he was Jewish -- so he travelled to South Bend, Ind., to fulfill with Father Ted Hesburgh, a pal after which it leader of Notre Dame, who thought the area was "terrific" and switched him onto other chapel leaders. With elevated supporters onboard, Lear paid out to offer the ad run in Washington, D.C., knowning that the systems would have it just like a report. Another chapel leader advised him to start a company around it and suggested the title People for your American Way.Their initial event will be a two-hour ABC show in 1982, "I Like Liberty," designed to show diversity included in the American fabric. The special featured Lady Bird Manley and Gerald Ford as co-hosts, and "it had Craig Goldwater and Jane Fonda on one stage," Lear appreciated. As nonpartisan since the special specific being, Falwell's Moral Majority first seen it becoming an effort to market liberal politics, including Lear's own.The televangelists, recognizing liberal Hollywood just like a target, fought against against back. Lear easily recited a line in the letter he received from Pat Robertson telling him that his "arms were short to box with God. Let go him.""And Jerry Falwell sent a e-e-newsletter calling me the 'No. 1 enemy in the American family inside our generation,' which i'd serious dying risks consequently," he mentioned.Since the influence of televangelism abated inside the late eighties, also did the energy to assist People for your American Way, Lear noted. Nevertheless the organization has elevated lately, and he's especially hopeful about its fortunes under Michael Keegan, leader since 2009, along with programs like the Youthful Selected Government bodies Network for progressive leaders. Lear also started a deal couple of years ago referred to as Born Again American, designed only to exhibit that patriotism is not ceded just like a concept right.People for your American Way now encourages a progressive agenda, but Lear still talks of the roots as not "liberal" but "American." He's pals with Nancy Reagan, who requested him and also the former business partner Jerry Perenchio to fly by helicopter to Simi Valley in September to visit the Republican debate within the Taxation Presidential Library. "I used to be possibly the main Democrat there, certainly really the only liberal, but that is the America I really like,In . he mentioned. It shojuld 't be an unexpected that Lear wasn't impressed in what he heard in case. On television, he's also expressed some reservations in regards to the current administration's performance and may support Leader Obama's re-election. "In my opinion the most effective factor Obama has choosing for him will be the nine people running for your Republican nomination. Once they were moving Obama signs, they might not perform a more acceptable job.InchNumerous high-profile figures from showbiz now utilize Lear, but among people he singles out is Make the most of Reiner, co-star of "All inherited,In . which has attempted issues different from early childhood education to same-sex marriage. "I am unsure what Make the most of knows. ...I have my passions. I have my concerns. I realize a good deal about a number of things, however don't begin to understand what some handful of (activists) know since they become students round the issues, which i avoid that."While a scenario could be produced the agenda in the religious right has not successful, due to the growing acceptance of gay rights as well as the failure (up to now) to overturn Roe versus. Wade, Lear doesn't purchase it. Bork is certainly a real estate agent to Mitt Romney's campaign, he highlights. "I learned in the beginning at People for your American Method that a number of these born-again Christian followers were used against their particular needs,Inch Lear mentioned. "That's the identical factor today. The Tea Party is stuffed with people just searching for their way, without real leadership within the Dems, without real leadership within the moderate Republicans. The extremes get it, and they have the cash since they hold the backing of individuals billionaire sources." Contact Ted Manley at ted.manley@variety.com

Woody Harrelson is a Psychopath, and 5 Other Stories You'll Be Talking About Today

Happy Thursday! Also in today’s edition of The Broadsheet: Remembering new Oscar producer Brian Grazer’s own “gay” controversy… The Criterion Collection comes to iTunes (but not without issues)… Clint Eastwood’s thing for Herman Cain… and more. · Woody Harrelson has joined the cast of Seven Psychopaths, which reunites In Bruges writer/director Martin McDonagh and star Colin Farrell in the story of a screenwriter (Farrell) seeking inspiration for his next script. When that inspiration arrives in the form of a dognapping caper targeting a psycho gangster (Harrelson), all hell breaks loose. Tom Waits, Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken are signed up as well — should be a hoot and a half. [Deadline] · I hate to bring this up so soon after Brian Grazer landed his new Oscar producing gig, but remember that whole flap that came down last year around the trailer for Grazer and Ron Howard’s film The Dilemma? The one where Vince Vaughn’s character called electric cars “gay”? And which Universal pulled from circulation? It’s like dj vu all over again! Except this time you should shoot me in the face, seriously, just make it stop. [LAT] · There’s good news and bad news for fans of the Criterion Collection: The good news is that you can now rent and/or buy a selection of the distributor’s titles on iTunes. Alas, the selection is woefully small (under 50 films!) to start with, and purchases don’t include the special features that arguably make Criterion what it is in the first place. Oh well! Baby steps, etc. [/film] · As foreseen, remake plans for the Toronto Film Festival sensation The Raid have trickled from rightsholder Sony Worldwide Acquisitions Group to its affiliated genre kingpins Screen Gems. Happy 62nd Birthday, Sigourney Weaver! What's Her Most Underrated Movie Moment?

Film legend and Movieline pal Sigourney Weaver turns 62 today, which means she’s been a working girl for almost 35 years. Damn, Ripley. Let’s pick her most underrated work on the big screen after the jump. Personally, I think I’ve pinpointed it. If your suggestion is You Again, I’m prepared to yell, “Get away from her, you bitch” at you. We can always use more serial killer dramas, and 1995’s Copycat is one of the funnest — and scariest — in the genre. Weaver plays field lecturer and serial kiiller expert Dr. Helen Hudson, whose expertise makes her the target of Daryll Lee Cullum (Harry Connick, Jr!), a murderer who likes recreating the work of famous serial killers in history. Weaver is strong, believable, and panicked in Copycat, and though Holly Hunter gives the movie’s most interesting performance as detective M.J. Monahan, it’s Weaver whose plight is compelling. I bet when visions of evil Harry Connick Jr. swim up to surface in Helen’s mind, it’s like the horrifying prequel to Dolphin Tale 3D. What’s your choice for Weaver’s most underrated role?

Victor Garber When ABC premieres its new Charlie's Angels tomorrow night, the voice of Charlie will sound awfully familiar to fans of another female-driven ABC adventure series. It had previously been announced that Hart to Hart veteran Robert Wagner - who owns a stake in the Angels franchise via an early partnership with veteran producers Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg - would be assuming the role, but his deal fell through.
